Measuring Connection in a Changing World

The Belonging Barometer is a groundbreaking research initiative that provides deep insights into the state of social connectedness across communities. Built on comprehensive data analysis and public engagement, this tool tracks how people in the UK experience belonging in their relationships, communities, workplaces, and society at large.

In our 2025 report, we surveyed 10,000 UK adults, capturing how factors like friendship, housing, governance, and social inclusion shape our collective sense of belonging. The results provide a powerful snapshot of the challenges and opportunities ahead. Over the next several years, we plan to bring this research to other countries around the world.

Key Insights from the 2025 Report

  • 1 in 10 people report having no close friends. This number rises to 20% among the unemployed.
  • 21% of British adults don’t feel they belong, and those with few friendships are far more likely to experience low levels of belonging.
  • Renters consistently rank lower on all belonging metrics than homeowners, with lower satisfaction in their local communities.
  • Half of young adults (18-34) reported feeling anxious yesterday, nearly double the rate of older adults.
  • Trust in political representation is low, with most people feeling unrepresented by national government yet showing higher confidence in local leadership.
